This is an astounding 3 oz, 2.4” by 1.6” by 1.6” DT Herkimer “diamond” quartz. Generally, these are crystal clear but this one is fenstered and has some golden healer inclusions. The fenstering introduces many glyphs and extra facets plus even a really nice rainbow on one side. Little students along some of the edges make the crystal look like it has teeny wings. It is quite extraordinary and from my personal collection.

Gem lore being what it is, this quartz comes from only one place in the world …Herkimer, NY. They are almost always doubly terminated and so brilliant that they look faceted like a diamond, hence the name “Herkimer Diamond”. They are indeed quartz, and although harder than regular quartz, are not as hard as a diamond and man has had nothing to do with the shape – 100% nature at work! And if you ever saw how these are separated from the matrix, you’d appreciate how easy it is to ding and fracture the crystals. Plus, the ground is very cold (the frost line is deep in New York) and each must be placed in a bucket of icy water to come to temperature gradually so as not to fracture completely. I grew up in Herkimer County and we used to dig these out of the road beds after the road crews graveled .. they were a child’s jewels and rare finds!
