Authentic Moldavite is getting difficult to find and I recently bought a collection from an old friend who has been collecting for years. This is a sword-shaped piece (more like a broad-sword) that is from Besednice. It is curved as well and when backlit, is a lovely shade of green moldavite weighing 5.52 grams and measuring 2.2” by 0.6 by 0.25”. The detail is absolutely fascinating with a striation to the back and lacy on the front, typical of the Besednice moldavites (aka “hedgehog) Moldavite is a very rare, and becoming even more rare, type of tektite found only in the Czech Republic and absolutely authentic. Besednice moldavite is even more rare in that the Besednice area has been plated out for years. The chemical composition is very similar to obsidian (volcanic glass) with one significant difference … moldavite contains iridium and the only iridium on earth came from meteors – from space!
